The data was released during national dialogue on road safety in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, held under the framework of the 7th UN Global Road Safety Week, which started on May 15.

According to the data, about 4000 people were injured in road accidents last year.

Over speeding, distracted driving, driving under influence of drugs or alcohol were cited among the leading causes of accidents in Rwanda.

“Road safety is a key component for sustainable security and development of our country. It facilitates business, health, education and all aspects of development,” Vincent Sano, Rwanda’s Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations said at the dialogue.

“The majority of road accidents are preventable as it is about mindset change to make road safety a choice and culture,” he added.

Globally, road accidents are said to claim the lives of more than 1.35 million people every year, making it the eighth leading cause of death.
