Rwanda’s weather agency said Thursday it had this week recorded a rare heat wave in different parts of the country, recording temperatures exceeding 32 degrees Celsius in the capital city Kigali, the highest in six years.

The highest temperatures 33 degrees Celsius in the capital, partly attributable to climate change, were "recorded for four consecutive days from March 5 to 8," the Rwanda Meteorology Agency said in its weather updates.

The hot days were due to a sunny period without rain, it said.

It added that such high temperatures, though rare in the country, are usually expected in February.

The last highest temperature previously recorded in Kigali was 32.5 degrees on August 17, 2017, according to the weather agency.

The weather agency however, said the heat wave is a short event and rains expected from March 9, and onwards will cool down the temperatures and bring the weather to normal.

On March 2, the weather agency predicted torrential rains from March to May which it warned could trigger potential disasters in different parts of Rwanda.

Rwanda Meteorology Agency said in its forecast that heavy rains of between 500 mm and 600 mm were forecast in parts across the country from March to May.
