Rwanda opens embassy in Indonesia

Rwanda Thursday opened its embassy in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Vincent Biruta officiated the embassy opening during his visit to the country, where he held bilateral talks with his counterpart Retno Marsudi.

“This embassy is a statement to our enduring friendship and will serve as a vital link in enhancing bilateral relations facilitating diplomatic engagements and providing services to our citizens. It also symbolizes our dedication to establishing a robust presence in Indonesia and furthering our diplomatic engagement in the region,” said Biruta.

The two ministers signed memoranda of understanding on general cooperation, political consultation and visa waiver for diplomatic and service passport holders.

Discussions also covered the establishment of a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between the two nations and the potential for a PTA with the East African Community.

The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry reported a 100% increase in trade with Rwanda last year, with a 32% rise in the first quarter of this year, indicating significant potential for further economic engagement, as per Marsudi's assessment.

Additionally, they addressed collaborative efforts to combat transnational organized crime and reaffirmed their ongoing support for Palestine.

"These accords reflect our shared dedication to nurturing a more profound and systematic partnership across diverse sectors," Biruta said at the event.

He expressed the hope for an ever-strengthening ties between the nations, founded on mutual respect and a common vision for the future.
