Rwanda’s central bank issues new 2000, 5000 banknotes

The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) on Friday unveiled new banknotes for the Rwandan francs 5000 and 2000 denominations.

The new banknotes will be in circulation alongside the old notes effective Sept. 3, the central bank said in a statement.

The new 5000 banknote measuring 145mm x 72mm, has lilac as the dominant color, coat of arms of Rwanda and an electrotype element representing the word "BNR" below it among the main features.

 The watermark is located at the right -hand side of the note.

In addition, the banknote bears the principal design building “Kigali Convention Center” at the front and the image of gorilla changing color depending on the direction the note is taken.

The 2000 banknote measures 142mm x 72mm, clear violet is the dominant color, bears Rwanda’s coat of arms and an electrotype element representing the logo of the bank "BNR" below it.

The watermark is located at the right-hand side as on the 5000 banknote.

It also bears Lake Kivu mountains as the principal design at the front and small basket changing color depending on the direction that the note is taken.

Both notes are written in English and Kinyarwanda local language.
