Rwanda eases nightlife restrictions for festive season
The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) announced Thursday that it had eased operating restrictions for bars, nightclubs, and entertainment venues for the festive season.
Since September, the restrictions targeting “non-essential services” were put in place apparently to address concerns about noise pollution and public disturbance.
But the measures have been unpopular, especially among hotel, restaurant, and nightclub owners after operating hours were shortened.
In a statement, RDB said between Dec. 15 and Jan. 17, bars are permitted to extend their operational hours until 02:00 (local time), and the restrictions will be lifted on Fridays, weekends, and public holidays.
“The end of the year festive season has begun, and the government of Rwanda wants people to celebrate and enjoy,” it said.
Along with this relaxation, the board warned against violations, emphasizing the need for establishments to adhere to noise pollution regulations.
Under the guidelines, sound levels in commercial areas are restricted to 55 decibels during the night.
The government encouraged celebration while ensuring compliance with necessary safeguards.
