RDF soldier sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of civilians

A military tribunal in Rwanda on Monday sentenced a soldier of the Rwanda Defense Force (RDF) to life imprisonment after being found guilty of the murder of five civilians last month.

Sergeant Gervais Minani, 39, was found guilty of premeditated murder, unlawful use of a firearm, and destruction of military property.

Minani was arrested when he opened fire, killing five civilians in a bar in a village in Nyamasheke district, western Rwanda on Nov.13.

During the trial on Dec.3, Minani pleaded guilty to murder charges.

The tribunal sitting at the scene of crime in Karambi Sector also stripped Minani of his military rank.
