Genocide ideology cases drop during mourning week

Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) said Tuesday that it recorded 47 cases related to genocide ideology involving 59 suspects during the just concluded mourning week, representing a drop compared to last year.

Thierry Murangira, RIB spokesperson told reporters the majority of the cases were recorded in Southern Province with 14.

This was followed by Eastern Province with 13 cases, Western Province 10 cases while seven cases were recorded in the City of Kigali.

The registered cases represent a 38.2 percent drop from 76 cases reported in the same period in 2025, according to RIB.

RIB showed that the majority of the suspects mainly male fall within the 37-46 age bracket, followed by adults aged 57 and above.

Murangira said their assessment showed that several cases in form of inciting verbal insults were directed at genocide survivors.

The commemoration week which started on April 7 ended on Monday with honoring of politicians who were killed during the 1994 genocide against Tutsi.

The commemorative activities for the 32nd genocide anniversary will continue until July 4, marking the 100-day calamity when about 1 million people, mostly of the Tutsi community and moderate Hutus, were killed in the genocide by Hutu extremists.
