African Union calls for uniform voice on Sudan

A uniform voice is needed by all actors speaking on the ongoing crisis in Sudan, an African Union official said Wednesday while briefing the United Nations Security Council.

African Union calls for uniform voice on Sudan

“There is a real need for the international community to speak with one voice and in coordination with the African Union,” Fatima Mohammed, the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the UN said.

Briefing the Council on behalf of AU Commission chairperson Moussa Mahamat Faki, Mohammed said the African Union remains concerned about the consequences that the current crisis could leave on the “overall political process which registered recently important milestones despite the difficulties it was facing.”

“It is essential for the Sudanese parties not to lose sight of the central objective of forming a broad-based civilian-led government headed by a Prime Minister appointed by consensus, to steer the transition to a new democratic dispensation in Sudan,” she said.

She mentioned the importance of taking full advantage of the strategic partnership of the African Union and the UN as well as regional actors to further strengthen coordination on the various aspects in order to optimize and maximize the efficiency of support.

The African Union Security Council has called for “an immediate ceasefire by the two parties without conditions” in order to avoid further bloodshed.
